What is a Domain Name?
A Domain Name is a series of text that is used to identifies one or more IP addresses. People remember names easier than they remember IP Addresses (eg 192.168.100.1) For example, the domain name Graphiklab.com.sg represents an IP address. Domain names are used in URLs to identify particular Web pages. For example, in the URL http://www.graphiklab.com.sg/index.php, the domain name is graphiklab.com.sg.
By allowing the use of unique alphabetical addresses instead of numeric ones, domain names allow Internet users to more easily find and communicate with web sites and other server-based services. The flexibility of the domain name system allows multiple IP addresses to be assigned to a single domain name, or multiple domain names to be assigned to a single IP address.
Every domain name has a suffix that indicates which top level domain (TLD) it belongs to. There are only a limited number of such domains. For example:
- .gov - Government agencies
- . edu - Educational institutions
- .org - Organizations (nonprofit)
- .com - commercial business
- .net - Network organizations
- .com.sg / .net.sg - Singapore
